The National Service scheme was started in Santhigiri College of Computer sciences, on 2007. Prof. K.A. Cyirac (Dept. of Computer Science) was the first programme officer of the unit. Mini camps, special camps, leadership camps, career guidance camps, intercollegiate and interuniversity camps, symposia, debate, different competitions, blood group identification camps, AIDS awareness programme and adoption of village are the various activities undertaken by our units over the years.
The NSS is part of the Development of Youth Affairs and Sports under the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India. It is a voluntary organization for students and the teachers.
The membership in N.S.S is voluntary and is strictly on a selective basis. Each student is subject to its discipline and code of behaviour. A student volunteer who has completed 240 hrs. of work and attended a special camp during the course of two years is eligible for NSS Certificate from the University. This certificate gives weightage for higher studies and is an additional qualification for appointment in public services.
National Service Scheme (N.S.S.) promotes respect for labour, discipline, Gandhian principles, national integration and work culture. The students are guided and directed by the programme officers. N.S.S. is a cradle for leadership training and for learning the fundamentals of group dynamics, and thereby, ensures success in life and personality development.
The objective of this scheme is personality development of the students through service to the community by awakening their social consciousness.
